In recent years, some interest has been shown in the option of 'mothballing' vineyards in an attempt to cut costs by reducing vineyard inputs in blocks from which fruit is not intended for harvest. Mothballing may seem like a good idea - a simple way of minimising inputs such as labour and chemicals when fruit is not in demand - however, the potential negative impacts of mothballing may prove devastating to not only one's own vineyard but also to neighbours' properties, while the task of bringing a vineyard back from mothballing may prove a significant challenge.
