Biography continues to be a vigorous and popular genre in the history of science, but, while the Newton, Darwin and Einstein 'industries' gallop on apace, 'other equally fascinating figures remain in the shadows'. And what of the careers and personal life stories of that much wider group of scientists and support staff who have played a lesser but nevertheless important role in science: postdoctoral scientists, research students, laboratory assistants, workshop and other technical staff, translators and editors, and so on?
