Atmospheric participates, both natural and anthropogenic, are among the most complex players in the story of the Earth s climate. Human industrial and agricultural practices are increasing the concentrations of certain types of aerosols, in certain parts of the globe, and these appear to be having at least a regional impact on climate. If we are to improve our understanding of aerosols and their environmental effects we need to significantly increase our knowledge of aerosol physical, chemical and optical properties, and how these vary across the globe. Here we will discuss the climatic effects of aerosols, the sort of data currently being sought, and the role that the Atmospheric Physics group at UNSW is playing in this essential environmental quest.
