Physicist Robert Ehrlich, author of "Why Toast Lands Jelly-side Down", loves exploring the silly side of science. In his new book "Nine Crazy Ideas in Science" he ranges from the theory that petrochemicals in the Earth are mostly of non-biological origin, meriting zero cuckoos meaning "why not?", to the contention that more guns means less crime to which he awards three cuckoos, meaning "almost certainly not true". He draws the line at awarding four cuckoos which he defines as "certainly false".
