Elephant seals have helped scientists to demonstrate thatrnfresh water from Antarctica’s melting ice shelves slowsrnthe processes responsible for the formation of deep-waterrnocean currents that regulate global temperatures. In 2011, arnteam of researchers discovered a fourth source of AntarcticrnBottom Water off Cape Darnley in East Antarctica. Thernlatest research, published in Nature Communications byrnthe same team, shows that Prydz Bay makes an importantrnsecondary contribution to Cape Darnley Bottom Water.
