The marine environment is integral to the coastalcommunity that I’m from. Beaches are the epicentre ofsocial events, surf provides recreation and seafood sustainsmy friends and family. As a kid I’d witness reoccurringpatterns, like beach erosion following storms or theseasonality of fisheries. A desire to understand what drovethese patterns, and to conserve the coastal assets thatmy community benefits from, led me to a formal marinescience degree in 2011.
