Maritime power in the Black Sea

The conflict in Ukraine and the Crimea in 2013-2015 has drawn global attention to the significant geopolitics of the Black Sea region. While most attention has been directed at land-based conflict, maritime power and its projection by the key protagonists is a key element of the broader territorial dispute. Deborah Saunders's book provides an excellent coverage of the complex situation governing maritime power in the Black Sea. Saunders provides a clear justification for her study focus, 'the Black Sea strategically located between the Europe, Asia and the Middle East has become an important geopolitical space'. This geopolitical space has been heightened in importance following the end of the cold war and breakup of the former Soviet Union.
