Nathan James Scarlett

On 11 July 2013, Nathan Scarlett passed away at the age of 37, 6 years after being diagnosed with bowel cancer. This was a devastating loss, not only to his family and friends but to the Australian viticultural industry. Nathan was diagnosed in 2006, and despite the intense treatment, Nathan achieved much of his professional success in the years that followed. Those who were not familiar with Nathan's personal challenges would have been unaware of his illness, and that's just the way Nathan wanted it. In his words, Nathan strove to achieve personal and professional success 'without an asterix'. He didn't want any concessions to be made for him or for people to say that he had done well 'for someone who has cancer'. Nathan remained focussed, positive and dedicated to his career throughout his illness.
