The Australian Army's head of modernisation and strategic planning, Major General Fergus (Gus) McLachlan, has used an air force analogy to describe Army's current transformation. "The Australian Air Force is rapidly moving toward being a 'fifth generation' air force," he told ADM. "We're probably a third generation army, modernising towards something that I suppose aspirationally we think of as a fourth gen or 4.5 gen army."
