The name Guenter Baron will convey little to most Australian librarians, but in 2001 the State Library in Berlin marked his retirement with a major Festschrift, Planen und Gestalten [Planning and Shaping] (reviewed AARL 36.4 2005), in which one contributor referred to him as a 'library multitalent'. This Festschrift amply documents Baron's record of professional excellence and the qualities of mind and character which made his career a byword. In 2010 Baron himself added to the record by producing with his memoirs a lengthy work of a bold character. Written with a candour and narrative tone unparalleled in German library literature, his reminiscences are often very amusing, colloquial and certainly, by German standards, indiscreet. But they are also invaluable for providing insights into contemporary research library history in Germany.
