The new Ashgate series The History of the Book in the West: A Library ofnGritical Essays aims to present 'a comprehensive resource of the most significantnpublished essays on book history in the West stardng with the codex andnfinishing in the 20th century'. Interestingly, the selected articles are reproducednin facsimile, preserving not just the original paginadon but the look and feel ofnthe journals they originally appeared in. Book historians are of course unusuallynsensitive to such issues, but it is difficult not to read this design decision as a veiledncomment on the increasing reluctance of libraries to maintain long runs of hardncopy journals
