摘要

Since 2008, Victoria University (VU) Library hasnemployed 20 or more Student Assistants annually whonwork on a casual basis for up to 12 hours per weeknduring terms/semesters to staff the Librsiry in StudynHall mode (where there is self-service access to PCs andncollections and limited staff assistance). This initiativenappears to have been highly successful in both meetingnstudent demand for greater access to the Library andnprovision of benefits to the students employed.nWithin VU Library and Learning Commons spaces, nstudent employees, working in a variety of programs, nnow account for up to 25% of personnel. Drawingnfrom data and feedback from student employees andntheir supervisors, the authors reflect on the impactnon the organisation of this initiative. In particulsir, nimplementation issues have included the cycle ofnrecruitment, induction and turnover; and integrationnof student employees into the main business andnculture of the organisation. The authors also discussnthe student employment programs as piirt of a broadernreorganisation of the library spaces.nAARLJune 2010 vol 41 no2 pp x-x
