Antarctic krill are at the bottom of the food chain, so their survival is of crucial importance to other species. Susan Bengtson Nash is exploring a possible link between declining biomass of the species and chemical pollutants. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is a keystone species in the Antarctic - as a species its presence contributes to a diversity of life and its extinction would lead to the extinction of other forms of life. Many large predators such as baleen whales, seals, penguins and other marine birds feed either exclusively or opportunistically on the krill swarms that form annually from the months of November to January.
