Iron Fertilisation lsn't a Carbon Solution

Fertilisation of the oceans with iron will not be a large-scale solution to carbon emissions although "boutique" opportunities may exist, according to a PhD student at the University of Sydney. Much of the Southern Ocean is very poor in iron, causing low biological productivity. The addition of small concentrations of iron can produce huge plankton blooms, drawing down tens of thousands of times as much carbon as iron is released (AS, Nov/Dec 2007, p. 14).
