Monitoring of radiation exposure received by the eye was not performed routinely in almost four years of radiopharmaceutical production for PET studies at SCGH, as preliminary studies and research from similar facilities indicated that the dose received was small (with whole body and finger radiation exposure of greater potential impact), and because of a lack of readily available monitoring equipment. Since then, whole body and finger doses for the RAPID (Radiopharmaceulical Production and Development) team have been well-defined, so attention has turned to monitoring eye exposure, since there is a risk of the formation of cataracts from manual dispensing. Approximately 2850 patient doses are dispensed annually to SCGH and SKG PET centres, with a typical patient dose of ~370MBq activity (±10%).
