Digital transition tops New Year agenda

Washington will spend 1998 confronting the impact of digital—a scenario its bureaucrats and politicians have helped create. Like the rest of the country, Congress, the FCC and other federal agencies will be waiting to see what directions HDTV, new satellite and mobile audio services and the Internet take in 1998. The courts are likely to play a part as well, since the biggest name in digital technology—Microsoft—wants to escalate its consumer electronics presence; some of its efforts are already under legal attack.
