Nearly ready for prime time, AMOLEDs seek role in TV

Brisk competition in flat-panel displays is about to become even more keen with the commercial arrival of active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) technology. Passive-matrix OLEDs already are fairly common in portable music players and as the secondary screens in cellular handsets. From now on, though, OLEDs will look to bigger markets. Heralding this change was Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.'s exhibit this May at the Society for Information Display (SID) of 3.78", 14.1" and 40" AMOLED panels. Nearby, the company's affiliate, Samsung SDI Co., Ltd., showcased 2"-class to 15"- and 17"-class AMOLEDs. Both companies have TV plans for their AMOLEDs.
