Earthquake safety Evaluations on track for US nuclear plants

(Nei) Expedited earthquake safety evaluations for U.S. nuclear energy facilities are largely completed and results to date confirm the plants' seismic safety, a senior industry executive said at an Oct. 7 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission briefing for the agency's commissioners. These evaluations, due to the NRC by Dec. 31, will provide an update on seismic safety pending completion of specialized risk studies to be conducted over the next several years. NRC analysis confirms that the nuclear plants "can continue to operate safely while the longer-term plant risk assessments are being completed," Clifford Mun-son, the NRC's senior technical adviser for siting, told the commissioners at an Oct. 7 briefing. "There has not been an overall increase in seismic risk."
