The World After May 2000 —The Elimination of Nuclear Weapons and the Peaceful Utilization of Atomic Energy

Six years ago, the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) held its 27th Annual Conference in the city of Hiroshima. Amidst the moderate demonstrations being held against the conference, a heated debate took place between the citizens of Hiroshima and atomic energy representatives concerning the relationship between nuclear weapons and peaceful utilization. Looking at both extremes of the opinion spectrum, some from Hiroshima completely rejected anything to do with atomic energy, including its peaceful utilization, while some from the atomic energy side held that since they had nothing to do with the issue of nuclear weapons, such matters should be left up to the government to decide.
