STA's JCO Accident Study Group Reveals Standards for Nuclear Damage Compensation

On December 15, the nuclear damage study group of the Science and Technology Agency (STA), which had been working on the issue of damage recognition vis-a-vis the JCO accident that took place the end of September 1999, announced its findings. Namely, it concluded that the accident should be regarded as "nuclear damage" as defined by the law on compensation for nuclear damage, insofar as injury to businesses, including so-called "nuclear blight" (losses from fear), is confirmed to have had a consequential relationship with the accident.
