JAIF Advances Ten-year Proposal for Japan's Nuclear Industry

On February 23, the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) held a press conference and announced a 20-point proposal, entitled "What Should Be Done in the Next Decade." In order for nuclear power generation to be competitive in deregulated electric power markets, the proposal made the following suggestions: 1. Internalizing the external costs of other electric power sources to give a fairer recognition of nuclear generation's contribution to combating global warming. 2. Steadily promoting the nuclear fuel cycle. 3. Creating a regulatory environment for the further construction of new NPPs. 4. Implementing scientifically-based, rational regulation of light water reactors (LWRs).
