John Lindsay received his bachelor's and master's degrees in geology in 1962 and 1964, respectively, from the University of New England, Australia; and in 1968 he was awarded a PhD in geology from Ohio State University (OSU). John was drawn to OSU because of their Byrd Polar Research Center. During his graduate career at OSU, he spent time in both the Arctic (Alaska, the Yukon) and Antarctica (the Central Transantarctic Mountains), where he was involved with mapping the Beardmore Glacier. His research interests at that time were focused on understanding modern glaciation and the ancient record of glaciation. In 1969, John joined the Apollo Program with NASA at the Johnson Space Center in Houston and spent much of the next 9 years involved in lunar mission work and research into the accumulation of clastic rocks on the lunar surface. He participated in the training of the Apollo astronauts and mission planning, and he developed his own research program on lunar rocks, in particular, impact-generated clastic rocks. John received a NASA Achievement Award for his work in the Apollo Lunar Program.
