Upgrading from standard to HD format

The surge in demand for digital TV, digital signal processing (DSP) technology, improved audio and video effects, as well as enhanced image and sound quality and performance, has urged suppliers from Hong Kong and mainland China to upgrade their models from the basic or standard functions. These advanced functions include DVB-S2 support, an MPEG decoder, a common interface (CI), HDTV, a dual tuner and 1080i output. To attract more buyers, suppliers have also added entertainment functions such as personal video recorders (PVRs), HDMI, and network and USB interfaces. Makers from both regions are also directing their efforts toward developing high-definition (HD) models that are compatible with other software from third parties or conditional access systems. Presently, standard- and high-definition models are not compatible with each other. Some makers now aim to create a universal platform for all conditional access systems.
