Power problems in the Pearl River

In 2004 alone there have been power shortages in 24 Chinese provinces or municipalities. This figure is up from 20 provinces during 2003. The provinces of Jiangsu Zhejiang. Shanghai, and Guangdong have the worst shortages. The overall shortage is estimated at some 60.000 GW. Manufacturing industries across Guangdong have been forced to shut down for two to four days a week during the summer months as the lack of power capacity strikes home. As Christmas approached this industrial heartland of China, many manufacturers experienced problems meeting their production orders for Christmas, one of the world's busiest retail peaks.
