With the trend in economic influence moving toward Asia-Pacific, United States regional naval policy is gradually being emphasised again. History, geography, and demography make the United States an integral part of the Asia-Pacific region. North American trade with the Asia-Pacific region has steadily increased through the years and despite the economic hiccups; the region is set for another major growth cycle in the near future. Some reports forecasted that the Asia-Pacific economies are estimated to climb to 50% of the world's GNP by the middle of the next century. The United States, a maritime nation with nearly half of the country's shores facing the expanse of the Pacific Ocean, is maintaining steady and focused efforts to ensure the Asia-Pacific region develops in ways favourable to American maritime interests as most Asian economies begin their economic recovery.
