The value of amphibious forces has been highlighted in the Gulf War and United Nations peace enforcement operations as in Somalia during the early 1990s, and recently in East Timor, Bosnia and Eritrea. The early deployment of expeditionary forces to areas of potential conflict, exploiting the greater time available onboard the ships to prepare for operations plus the ability to be self sufficient and independent of shore infrastructure, is a major asset to a force commander.
