UN Peacekeeping At Crossroads, Must Be Kept Relevant

The United Nations (UN) has been deploying military personnel for peacekeeping operations since 1948 when the Security Council (SC) authorised the deployment of UN military observers to the Middle East to monitor the Armistice Agreement between Israel and its Arab neighbours. Since then, UN peacekeepers have contributed to a legacy of stability of countries from El Salvador to Namibia, from East Timor (now Timor-Leste) to Cote d'lvoire, and from Mozambique to Cambodia. According to UN data, more than 3,500 peacekeepers gave their lives for the ideals of the UN Charter.
