The timing of Nokia's efforts to raise the profile of its support for an industrywide cap on intellectual property rights (IPRs) for WCDMA equipment has been branded curious at best and self-serving at worst, as the vendor goes about trying to convince a suspicious industry. What immediately stands out as curious is the fact that Nokia has chosen to preach exactly the same gospel as the 3G Patent Platform Partnership (3G3P) - the body charged with working toward a cumulative 5% IPR cap for WCDMA - but from a pulpit in a completely different church. "We are not a member of the 3G3P, and that has to do with the legal structure of the organization," says Nokia Networks' vice president of communications, Arja Suominen.
