Coronavirus impact slows Airtel Africa subscriber growth

Airtel Africa has published its results for three months to end-June 2020, registering a 5.3% quarter-on-quarter drop in revenue as the COVID-19 pandemic slowed subscriber growth. Turnover the quarter was US$851 million, dowr from US$899 million in the preceding quarter but up from US$796 million in the June 201S period. Similarly, EBITDA dipped by 5.5% q-o-q to US$375 million, but was up 7.8% year-on-year from US$348 million. Net income, meanwhile, fell to US$42 million from US$65 million in the previous quarter and US$125 million in the year-ago period. After substantially increasing its CAPEX in the first three months oi 2020 to US$246 million - compared to US$15C million, US$147 million and US$99 million in the preceding three quarters - the group slowec its spending to US$66 million during the perioc under review.
