THE QUEST FOR POWER

If there's one area of core military technology that has proved the most difficult to master for Asian nations striving for superpower status it is propulsion systems for high-end platforms such as jet fighters and submarines. More generally, anything that moves under its own power comes to be defined by the technology that enables it to do this, and truly independent military capabilities depend to some extent on the ability to develop competitive power plants locally.
