Eyeing Spot in Elite Ranks, Samsung Techwin Hones Service Skills

After more than a decade of effort to make its name in the global market for semiconductor systems and equipment, Samsung Techwin Co., Ltd. finds itself juggling incoming orders for its SMT chip assembly machines. Formerly known as Samsung Aerospace, the company handles businesses as diverse as military equipment, optical digital equipment, and core chip modules. However, says Christopher J. Chang, Director, "Within two years, we hope to find a place among the six most elite global suppliers of semiconductor and board assembly machines." It is a lofty goal, especially for a latecomer like Samsung Techwin. However, the company is making progress. In 1999, it shipped 1,200 chip mounters to Europe, Southeast Asia, the United States, China and Taiwan. This was enough to give it 4 or 5 percent of the US$3 billion global market for chip mounters. This year, management targets shipments of 2,000 chip mounters. It hopes to capture 20 percent of the global market for medium-speed chip mounting machines. So far, the company's production lines have been running at full capacity, turning out 200 units each month.
