Cypress Subsidiary in Philippines Prepares for Growing Role as FBGA Production Base

Although it has been in business for just a few years, Cypress Semiconductor Philippines, Inc. (CSPI) already is preparing to expand its capacity. Management has allocated 537 million pesos, (about US$13 million) to establish another assembly line exclusively for fine-pitch ball- grid array (FBGA) packaging. This move will help enhance the global capabilities of the Cypress group, according to Daniel Javelosa, Managing Director. "This specialty production line will take advantage of the large volume demand for our More Battery Life (MoBL) SRAMs, which have become the SRAM of choice for mobile phones," says Javelosa. He notes that the MoBL SRAM uses up to 90 percent less power than standard, low-power SRAMs. As a result, it dramatically extends battery life in wireless products including cellular phones, pagers, personal digital assistants and handheld electronic games.
