Rohm has devised a micro-miniature package measuring 3.5mm in diameter, for laser diodes that work in thin optical pickups. The company intends to continue using this package for various laser diodes. At the same time, it will position the RLD78MYR1 as its flagship product for CD drives. Management already has raised the production volumes of this model. The company expects the market for CD drives to reach 200 million units annually. The annual growth rate, including drives for computers, computer peripherals and A/V equipment, could reach 7 to 10 percent per year. Accordingly, Rohm will continue striving to deliver value-added products with excellent reliability and suitable cost-performance ratios.
