The increasing awareness on the environmental hazards of electronic manufacturing process and electronic by-products has correspondingly raised the industry's stance to adopt a more eco-friendly process. For several years now, the European Union council and EU Parliament have put forth the establishment of several green directives that address such concerns. The Energy-using Product (EuP) Directive aims to design energy-efficient products for those regarded as high-energy consumption goods and will fully take into effect as law on Aug.11, 2007. The Restriction of the Use of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) is concerned with limiting the toxic content or substance of six banned substances with the Directive taking effect on July 2006. Meanwhile, the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) has been enforced into law on Aug. 13 and is concerned with breaking down the electrical products for reuse, recycle or recovery at the end of life.
