The printed circuit boards (PCBs) from Taiwan made their way to Europe and U.S. markets, with technological maturity and production cost as foremost considerations. In 1968, Ampere Electronics, the first American PCB factory, was established in Taiwan. During that time, Taiwan was in the middle of economic transformation from an agricultural- into an industrial-based economy, and cheap labor made Ampere Electronics a famous enterprise with considerable scale. The company became the cradle of the PCB industry in Taiwan. It promoted the development of the PCB industry in northern Taiwan, and Taibei County and Taoyuan County became the base camps of the PCB industry. During the last 40 years, the country's upstream raw material and equipment industries have developed at the right time and have occupied vital positions in the global PCB industry (Fig. 1).
