Effective Resources Use Advances Environmental Protection

This article introduces the latest trends of optical components and materials that support technological innovations of flat panel displays (FPDs). Technologies described in the following sections were presented in keynote speeches at the symposium of the Society for Information Display 2014 (SID 2014) held in San Diego, California, U.S.A. in June, and Film Tech Osaka held at INTEX Osaka, Japan in September. Reflective thin-film-transistor liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCDs) panel images use the reflection of natural light, such as sunlight, as a light source, and therefore they do not require a backlight unit (BLU). Hence, they use less power and are thin and light. In recent years, the development and practical use of reflective TFT-LCDs has been progressing for application in mobile devices. However, unlike transmissive TFT-LCDs, reflective TFT-LCDs cannot adjust display colors by BLU, and the waveform characteristics of the polarizer used render as display colors. Therefore, reflective TFT-LCDs that use a conventional polarizer reproduce whites with a tint of greenish yellow, and blacks with a tint of blue. This has been pointed out as a weakness of reflective TFT-LCDs.
