In one of his early monologues, Stanley Holloway has ‘Old Sam’ say that he has “some-nthing in the bottle for the morning. One each a-piece all round.” In like manner, Tony nLocantro assigns his singers “one each-a piece all round...” We may regret the fact that nsuch infuential artists as Placido Domingo (whose repertory includes more than 130 nroles during the past half century and whose picture is on every CD sleeve in this set) nand Maria Callas are limited to a single selection each. EMI has given us, nevertheless, na glimpse of a 54-year period of recording history. The transfers offer musical and per-nformance comparisons rather than a chronological sequence.
