Bon Temps and Good News: The Influence of New Orleans on the Performance Style of Mahalia Jackson.

This paper argues that the performance style of gospel singer Mahalia Jackson was in-nformed as much by the indigenous music of New Orleans, particularly by the jazz orches-ntras and marching bands, as it was by the music and sermon style of the African Ameri-ncan Church. After a brief survey of Jackson’s childhood in New Orleans’ Fourteenth Ward nand migration to Chicago in the late 1920s, the paper identifes fve elements of New nOrleans infuence on the “Queen of Gospel’s” performance techniques. It offers examples nof each from phonograph recordings she made between 1937 and 1953 and her television nperformances in the early 1960s.
