These two recent essay coUections from Cambridge University Press under review providena diverse overview of major trends in the burgeoning field of recorded music studies. Theirntiming seems particularly apt, coming at the end of a decade that saw fundamental changesnin the transmission, conception, and consumption of music. With the recent increases inninternet bandwidth, computer processing, and hard drive memory, musical recordings havenshifted from primarüy being objects - mechanicaUy or magneticaUy captured on a physicalnmedium - to being digital files, spirited across the globe at the cUck of a button. This historicalnmoment aUows us to consider afresh the impUcations of recorded sound inscribed onna material artifact: whether sheUac, vinyl, magnetic tape, or an optical disc.
