Boeing has been awarded a $265 million contract to build nine more MH-47G Block Ⅱ Chinook helicopters for U.S. Army Special Operations Aviation Command, according to a July 31 Defense Department contract announcement. The company is now under contract to build 24 of the G-model Chinooks. The upgrades in the Block Ⅱ version include newly designed rotor blades, major changes to the drive system, non-segmented fuel cells and other improvements expected to add range and increase load capacity by roughly 4,000 pounds. Honeywell received approval from the U.S. Army through a product verification audit and opened a state-of-the-art T55 Repair and Overhaul Center of Excellence facility near its Honeywell Aerospace headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona. The new center optimizes operations and enhances support by co-locating engineering, production, repair and overhaul capabilities, Honeywell's T55 engine has supported the CH-47 Chinook helicopter for nearly 60 years, during which more than 6,000 T55 engines were produced and logged about 12 million hours of operation. The company entered into an agreement with the U.S. Army in June to demonstrate and fly its upgraded T55 engine. The installation and demonstration will take place on a CH-47F Chinook at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, under the supervision of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center.
