Salyut For Navy: Flagship Of The Russian Aeroengine Industry Offers Navy Gas Turbines

The year of 2005 was a turning point in the Russian weapons export: the focus shifted from aviation to naval equipment. The share of the latter in the grand total of Russian weapons export grew from 24% in 2004 to 51 % in 2005. This made the leading companies of the Russian aeroengine industry look for opportunities in the market for naval equipment. The largest Russian aeroengine company FGUP MMPP Salyut (Abbreviation in capitals stands for Federal State Unitary Enterprise "Moscow machinery-building plant Salyut") declared its intention to create gas turbines for surface ships. The company's own design house, established six years ago, launched development of gas turbines for the navy, targeting "frigate" and "destroyer" classes of surface combatants. These are positioned as fifth-generation of Russian gas turbines for warships. Among them is GTU-16S, in the class of 16MWt.
