A history of Shropshire -Shrewsbury: general history and topography

This long-awaited volume in the Shropshire series of the Victoria County History has almost a sense of resurrection. The first volume in the set was published in 1908, and then work stopped until Shropshire County Council agreed to fund the local expenses of compiling and editing volumes, with the University of London taking responsibility for their publication. Between 1960 and 1998 six volumes appeared, but since 2002 there has been no local office in the county. A single volume on the history of the county town was planned as long ago as 1991, and what is now published is the first part of a proposed two-part work. It has been edited by staff at the VCH central office in London, working with many contributors in Shropshire.
