摘要

In the contemporary world matters of science and religion are often left in the hands of professionals. One dare not offer input from outside one's competency. At the turn of the eighteenth century, such a demarcation was not yet in place. A person trained in law could easily enter into philosophical, theological, and scientific debates. Such was the case for Roger North, a devout member high church leaning member of the Church of England, who sought to construct a natural philosophy rooted in, but not limited to Cartesian thought. He did so in conversation with the works of mathematician/ theologian Isaac Newton and latitudinarian theologian Samuel Clarke, who was an intimate friend of Isaac Newton.
