Professor Dr. rer. nat. Dr. mont. h.c. Horst Lippmann (1931-2008)

On August 9,2008, Professor Horst Lippmann, former editor of the Archive of Applied Mechanics from 1986 to 1996 and Professor Emeritus of Mechanics at the Technische Universitat Miinchen, passed away. In memory of this most influential scientist, who can be ranked as one of the leading researchers in continuum mechanics of materials in the second half of the twentieth century, the editor-in-chief of Archive of Applied Mechanics and Lippmann's successor in Munich have decided to put together this special issue. All the authors, who interacted with Lippmann throughout many years at various stages of his and their professional careers, have dedicated their contributions to Horst Lippmann to honor his broad and pioneering achievements in many fields of mechanics.
