Toxic waste from Cold War-era nuclear programs will take thousands, and maybe even millions, of years to fully decay. A recent ideas competition by architectural research initiative Arch Out Loud called for markers to "deter inadvertent human intrusion into the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant" in Carlsbad, N.M., that could exist for 10,000 years. The winning submission, Testbed by New York-based Agency-Agency (shown), proposes to install carbon dioxide sequestration technologies along with mineral extraction resources. Over time, these processes would create new geological forms that would become site markers.
