From the beginning, tim alt, aia, founder of altus architecture + design, knew he wanted to save the tamarack tree. The lot chosen by his new clients-the site of an old house that had been taken down by a contractor with plans to build a spec home there-featured the tamaracfcand several mature pine and spruce trees. Not that his clients, an international couple (he's English, she's French) and their two young boys, harbored any of the conventional Minnesota f antasies of a rustic, woodsy retreat. "From the first meeting, they were explicit," Alt recalls. "They wanted an industrial and modern structure nestled in the woods." Because modern residential design both here and abroad implies abundant large windows, it was important to consider the quality of the views they would offer. Lacking a lake or mountain vista, Alt determined that for this house, on this site, preservation of the existing stand of trees was crucial.
