Sixty years after the end of the Second World War the new, central Holocaust Memorial in Germany offers an indication of the current state of the debate about the culture of memorials. The fact that Peter Eisenman's project was selected from the innumerable proposals for the memorial reflects the prevailing wish at the time for something of considerable size. That subsequently a turn was made from the abstract, symbolic thought of the American star architect to the provision of concise information is the result of the radicalism with which Germany's intellectual and political elite originally set about this task. The result now is a strange hybrid that, in this very respect, reflects the character of Germany with all its radical contrasts. Thus the Holocaust Memorial also mirrors the difficult overall cultural situation in Europe.%Sechzig Jahre nach Kriegsende gibt das neue zentrale Holocaust-Denkmal Deutschlands Auskunft über den aktuellen Stand der Memorialkultur-Debatte. Dass man aus den zahllosen Vorschlägen für das Memorial seinerzeit das Projekt von Peter Eisenman ausgewählt hat, entsprach dem damaligen Wunsch nach Größe. Auch dass man später eine Kehrtwende vom abstrakten Symboldenken des amerikanischen Theorie-Stars zu lapidarer Information vollzog, ist Resultat der Radikalität, mit der die intellektuelle und politische Elite Deutschlands hier ursprünglich zu Werke gegangen war. Das Ergebnis ist nun ein eigenwilliges Zwitterwesen, das dem Charakter Deutschlands mit seinen radikalen Gegensätzen entspricht. So reflektiert das Holocaust-Memorial auch die schwierige kulturelle Gesamtsituation Europas.
