Children's daycare centre in Trinite, France - Strategies of Mediterranean architecture

In Nice, which for historical reasons has been influenced more by Italian culture (Nice belonged to the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont before being annexed by Napoleon Ⅲ in 1860), the Mediterranean architecture scene is articulated differently than in the rest of southern France. In Nice a kind of purism has been able to establish itself, whereas in the area around Marseilles sensuality is combined with trash and poetry: Rudy Ricciotti, who is based in Bandon, uses a sculptural formal idiom in making concrete masses with sensual curves (as in his Musee Jean Cocteau), whereas Remy Marciano expresses the textual material quality of concrete in facades that use a patchwork kind of shuttering (e.g. the Rufy sports hall in Marseilles).
