The mall - white as the driven snow

With new cloud-like entrances, marble floors and plenty of light ATP have given the SCS mall a fresh modern CI. The Shopping City Sued (SCS) is Austria's first and largest shopping centre. On a gross floor area of 192,500 m~2 currently around 330 shops, restaurants, cinemas and bars operate. 4,500 people work in the SCS, it attracts up to 25 million visitors annually. The first part of the building was opened in 1976, Austria's first IKEA settled nearby in 1977, ten years later the centre was further extended, closing the gap between the mall and IKEA. The Multiplex cinema centre has been in existence since 1995. In 2008 Unibail-Rodamco acquired shares in the SCS. The integral planning office ATP architekten ingenieure has given the enormous inhomogeneous existing building a contemporary CI. ATP focussed on visually calming the building and giving it a clear organisation. This starts with cars: the flow of traffic, anything up to 10,000 vehicles, is now directed differently, columns with sensors guide you to the unoccupied parking spaces. The new entrances make a strong impression: glass boxes measuring ten by ten metres project out of artificial cloud formations made of white Alucobond. These are up to 18 metres high, have a surface area of around 500 m~2 and are highly visible from the motorway. These decorative three-dimensional objects are self-supporting and direct wind-loads away from the existing building.
