Hardly any exhibition could be more ideally suited to the Villa Stuck than the show "In the Temple of the Self: the Artist's House as a Total Work of Art".The 34-year-old painter Franz von Stuck, the shooting star of the Munich Sezession, designed his house as a neoclassical building with a purist exterior and an interior that reveals a fairy-tale opulence. "The villa was celebrated by his contemporaries as a modern sensation", explains curator Margot Th. Brandlhuber. In his search for models the artist did not look to Bavaria but moved at an international level, finding for instance Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Frederick Leighton in London. The catalogue foreword begins with "101 Spring Street, New York". Behind this address is a building with a cast-iron facade in Manhattan, the residence and studio of Donald Judd. On entering the renovated building today one is immersed in Judd's world of ideas.
